About American Cancer Society

The American Cancer Society (ACS) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1913 and headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. As the largest voluntary health organization in the United States, ACS is passionately committed to saving lives from cancer. The organization is working to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays—a world where cancer never steals another year from anyone's life. ACS combines a relentless passion with the wisdom of nearly a century of experience to make this vision a reality and get results. Thanks in part to its work, 11 million cancer survivors, and countless others who have avoided the disease, will celebrate a birthday this year.

How ACS works

ACS has 12 chartered divisions, more than 900 local offices nationwide, and a presence in more than 5,100 communities.

Washington National's role

Washington National in partnership with HOPE established an initial gift of $100,000 as an endowment with the American Cancer Society to help fund cancer research, educational programs, services for cancer patients and their families, and further their mission. Washington National is also a proud supporter of  American Cancer Society’s peer-reviewed grant program by providing a second gift of $50,000 to support the work of Dr. Michael Verneris, a current ACS grantee and associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Minnesota.  His project seeks to understand how natural killer cells can be used not only to kill cancer cells, but also to reduce chemotherapy-induced injury to the lymph nodes and intestine.
